Palermo’s hopes of safety have been revived after beating Roma, but Giuseppe Sannino insists “the Sword of Damocles” still hangs over them ahead of a clash with Sampdoria.

The Sicilians are still in penultimate place and three points adrift of the safety zone, but a desperate situation was improved by last week’s surprise 2-0 victory.

“We are still in a delicate situation. As things stand, we are relegated, but the lads understood what is happening and nothing has changed after the Roma win,” warned Coach Sannino.

“We still have the Sword of Damocles hanging over our heads and have to stop it falling over the next eight rounds.

“The fans expressed their disappointment, which is only natural. I told the players that if people ask for autographs, it is because they are in love with the club. Seeing their beloved in these conditions upsets them.”

Goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino has skipped training several times this week due to illness and injury, but is in the squad travelling to Genoa.

“He is not at his best, but he really wants to give his contribution. I don’t know if Sorrentino will play, but in any case we have alternatives.”

Palermo squad for Sampdoria: Benussi, Brichetto, Sorrentino; Aronica, Dossena, Garcia, Kosnic, Morganella, Nelson, Von Bergen; Arevalo Rios, Anselmo, Barreto, Donati, Faurlin, Formica, Ilicic, Kurtic, Viola; Boselli, Dybala, Fabbrini, Miccoli, Sperduti
