The striker got into several arguments with supporters at the Trigoria training ground and was jeered during games, fuelling speculation of an imminent transfer to Tottenham.

He particularly lost their respect when taking a penalty off Francesco Totti and then missing it, then flew to London when suspended for the Rome Derby.

“There were some negative moments, but they are all behind us now,” he told Roma Channel.

“I was irritable because I couldn’t score, but I’m fine now. At this moment I am relaxed and trying to give my best for the team. The rest is all idle chatter.

“There was a period in which the fans complained, but they show me a lot of affection now. In recent games we have rediscovered our level of performance and want to end this season the best way possible.”

Roma host Napoli on Sunday evening, then face Lazio for the Coppa Italia Final on May 26.
