Riccardo Montolivo underwent surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament and the Milan captain will be out for five to six months.

The news was confirmed in a statement by the official club website this morning.

Montolivo sustained the serious left knee injury while on international duty in the 1-1 draw with Spain on Thursday.

He went under the knife today with Professor Herbert Schoenhuber, who was “satisfied” with the surgery.

It is the second serious injury Montolivo picked up while playing for Italy, as he fractured his leg in a friendly against the Republic of Ireland in May 2014.
