Joakim Maehle has left Serie A to join Wolfsburg on a permanent transfer from Atalanta, bringing to an end a two-year spell in Italy’s top flight.
The 26-year-old has signed a four year contract in the Bundesliga, running until the summer of 2027.
Maehle joined Atalanta from Genk in January of 2021, signing for a fee of €10m. He has since gone on to make 80 league appearances for La Dea, contributing with four goals.
Wolfsburg have been busy in the Serie A market this window, having brought in fellow full-back Rogerio from Sassuolo at the beginning of August.
Speaking for the first time as a Wolfsburg player, Maehle claimed he was looking forward to a fresh challenge in the Bundesliga.
“For me, the move to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga is a challenge that I’m really looking forward to,” he said.
“In recent years I’ve been able to gain an incredible amount of experience at the highest level in Serie A. Now I want to prove myself in the Bundesliga and I will do everything I can to find my feet in my new environment as quickly as possible.”
Wolfsburg sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz said in a statement on the club’s website: “We are very pleased that Joakim has decided to join VfL Wolfsburg. He is a very experienced player who can occupy both the right and left side of the back line,”
He continued: “His quality and experience will help the team and I’m sure we’ll enjoy him in the future.”
