While English media such as the Daily Mail insist a deal is imminent for the Argentina international, the reports emanating from Italy are very different.

According to Sky Sport Italia, today’s meeting failed to find a breakthrough, so director Walter Sabatini is prepared to leave London.

Roma are requesting at least €35m for Lamela (£30m), while so far the Spurs offer goes no higher than €30m (£25.7m).

It is not a huge gap, so could be whittled down with further negotiations.

The 21-year-old scored 15 goals in 33 Serie A matches last season, also providing five assists.

Meanwhile, there are rumours Arsenal and Liverpool could dive in with their own proposals for Lamela.

The Giallorossi are in a position of greater strength after selling Pablo Daniel Osvaldo to Southampton for €15.1m, so there is no pressure to part with Lamela.

Roma have also been in London discussing Marco Borriello’s potential move to Fulham or West Ham United.

It’s suggested while in the English Capital they enquired after Chelsea striker Demba Ba.
