Feyenoord director general Eric Gudde admits supporter clashes in Rome were 'absolutely deplorable', but believes his club should not be sanctioned.

Supporters of the Dutch club were involved in substantial clashes before the game, prompting a response from the capital's mayor Ignazio Marino.

Italy premier Matteo Renzi reacted strongly as well, calling the incidents 'an insult to civility'.

Gudde joined in condemning the events in an interview with Dutch TV outlet NOS, as reported by Ansa.it.

“What happened in Rome was absolutely deplorable,” he has said.

“I'd like to be clear that Feyenoord absolutely disassociate themselves from what happened.

“When you visit a city you should leave everything the way you find it.”

However, Gudde ruled out the possibility of UEFA sanctions.

“UEFA decides according to what happens inside the stadium, and everything went fine there.

“We are responsible for the supporters that are in the stands, those who are registered with the club and who behaved properly at the stadium.

“But we have noted at least 600 supporters who were in Rome without being issued a ticket. Are they responsible for the incidents, or is it the supporters registered with Feyenoord?

“In fact, I think Roma will be sanctioned heavily for throwing smoke bombs.”
