According to Sky Sport Italia, the meeting between Inter chief Beppe Marotta, Mauro Icardi and wife Wanda Nara did not yield much progress.

“Inter's Sport CEO Giuseppe Marotta today held a cordial meeting with Mauro Icardi and Wanda Nara in search of a solution to satisfy the best interests of all involved,” read a statement on the club’s official Twitter account.

The wording of the statement in itself is strange if, as they all continue to insist, Icardi’s absence is due to a knee injury and not a power struggle behind the scenes.

Icardi’s knee problem flared up after he was stripped of the captaincy and he has not even been in the squad since then.

Sky Sport Italia pundit Gianluca Di Marzio claims today’s meeting provided little progress on either side, as both parties remain firm on their initial positions.

The club has no intention of giving Icardi back the armband, while the player and his wife/agent continue to insist he “did nothing wrong” and the decision was unwarranted.

This meeting therefore was not so much to discuss the future, contract renewals or summer exits, but rather to make clear what brought them to this point.
