Inter Coach Walter Mazzarri has upcoming fixtures with Saint-Etienne and Verona to apparently fend off the threat of being replaced.

The Nerazzurri currently sit ninth in Serie A after a poor start to the campaign, but the Coach has nevertheless retained the backing of President Erick Thohir.

However, a defeat to bottom-side Parma on Saturday may have caused Thohir to re-evaluate his stance, according to the Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Milan-based newspaper reports that losing for a second time to a team at the bottom of the standings – Inter also lost to Cagliari – and the results of the other teams vying for third place may cause Thohir to act.

While the Indonesian tycoon would be reluctant to pay-off Mazzarri’s €3m a year given Inter’s struggles to meet Financial Fair Play targets, missing out on the Champions League would be even more detrimental.

Therefore, the sports daily claims that Mazzarri must beat Saint-Etienne and Verona in his next two games if he is to hang on to his job on the San Siro bench.

The speculation comes despite the words of director general Marco Fassone, who insisted there was ‘no emergency’ with the Coach.

Mooted successors to the former Napoli Coach include Roberto Martinez of Everton, Sampdoria’s Sinisa Mihajlovic and former Manchester United manager David Moyes.
