The Rossoneri had won the right to build a new arena in the Portello area of the city, but appear to have abandoned the plan in favour of staying at San Siro, to the frustration of their co-tenants.
“The two teams cohabit, and will continue to cohabit,” Chiara Bisconti from the Department of Sport told La Repubblica.
“There’s an agreement which locks down San Siro until 2030. In short, there are no concerns, but there’s a willingness to think of scenarios which create value for them and the city.
“Cohabitation is not a problem, but a second stadium in the city would allow either side to make progress with their business model.
“If one of them wants to go ahead with another stadium, then the administration is prepared. In my opinion, it’s an opportunity not to be missed.”
The two clubs have agreed to lease Stadio Giuseppe Meazza from Milan city council until 2030, for a combined €9m per year.
