The former Juventus tactician already announced his decision to resign after the Euros and join Chelsea, opening the doors to several new candidates for his position.

Tavecchio, the head of the Italian football federation, was at the Champions League semi-final draw today, and took the opportunity to discuss Conte's succession.

“I don't want to anticipate anything about this argument, because everything is in flux,” he told Premium Sport. “I think by the time we come to the Euros, we'll already know the name of the next Coach.

“[Jose] Mourinho could be free? I very much doubt his salary demands would be within our reach.

“We're in a pause for meditation. Every day the situation of the various Coaches evolves, so it's premature to discuss it now.”

“The Champions League semi-finals? We're regretful, as Juventus could have been there. Unfortunately this is how things went.

The President also discussed the introduction of video replay technology, which placed the FIGC in a potentially conflictual position with the International Football Association Board.

“We've been among the forerunners in this field. I used all of the political influence that I could back when it mattered.

“We introduced goal-line technology and the results speak for themselves. I consider the advent of mechanisation and technology in football to be inevitable.

“I see no cause of conflict with referees, as this type of help will only be applied experimentally, and only in 25 per cent of the games.

“I scheduled a meeting with the Lega Serie A and B, as well as with the referees, on April 21. We'll have this discussion then.”
