Montreal Impact have confirmed that veteran Italian defender Alessandro Nesta has joined the club.

The 36-year-old, who left Milan this summer at the end of his contract, has agreed an 18-month deal with the Canadian club.

“I'm very happy to be here,” Nesta stated. “Despite some offers to continue my career in Europe, I was looking for a new challenge and wanted to play in the MLS.

“Upon visiting my friend Marco Di Vaio to see him play his first game with Montreal, I met great people in this club.

“I really liked what I saw and I was convinced Montreal was where I wanted to be.”

The centre-back, who was also being linked with New York Red Bulls, joins fellow Italians Di Vaio, Matteo Ferrari and Bernardo Corradi at the club.

“He already feels a part of the team,” Impact President Joey Saputo stated when asked about the deal.

“For a player who won the 2006 World Cup and played at the highest level for 20 years, he was extremely humble and it was easy to come to an agreement with him.”
