Inter general manager Marco Fassone says a “negative atmosphere” was behind the dismissal of Walter Mazzarri, and admits the Nerazzurri must tighten their belts.

Former Napoli Coach Mazzarri was dismissed on Friday, being replaced by Roberto Mancini, who will begin his second spell at the club in Sunday’s Milan derby.

Mazzarri had received the public backing of Inter President Erick Thohir, but Fassone believes a negative atmosphere at San Siro made the Coach’s sacking inevitable.

“We’re enthusiastic about Mancio,” Fassone told reporters at the Gazzetta dello Sport’s ‘Bello del Calcio’ awards.

“With Mazzarri there was a negative atmosphere which led to his dismissal, but he’s still a good Coach and he’ll soon find another job.

“Paying the salaries of two Coaches [Mancini and Mazzarri] weighs heavily on the balance sheet, and will affect what we do in the transfer market, but Mancini thinks our squad is one of excellent quality.”
