“On Wednesday I was supposed to be at the stadium because it was a particularly important game for us,” he told Czech paper Sport after receiving a medal of honour from his home nation.

“President Agnelli was in the United States and also disappointed he couldn’t be at the match. During the ceremony I kept my phone switched off, but when I turned it back on, bad messages started arriving.

“I was checking the minute by minute action and read ‘1-0 to Sassuolo, Chiellini sent off.’ It was half-time and I was on the verge of a coronary…

“I spoke to Agnelli until 1am, as I was in Prague and he was in the United States. He was truly infuriated by how things had gone. It had been a long time since I’d heard him so furious.

“We are 14th in the table and that doesn’t happen often. We are all terribly disappointed. Naturally I was also in contact with (director Beppe) Marotta, who was at the game, and he filled me in on all the details.

“It’s an ugly situation, we’ve got to do something to get back to winning ways. We were convinced that we were back, then received this punch in the face…”

Nedved took on a directorial role after retirement and was recently appointed Vice-President of Juventus.

“If I am not at the training ground, then I am in my office, two or three times a week. I feel better when on the field because I think I can help more in contact with the Coach and sporting director.

“I believe it is also important for the players that I spend time with them. We have a fairly young squad and I can give them advice.

“In any case, playing is much easier than being a President!”
