Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has assured that he is still ‘counting’ on James Rodriguez, casting doubt over a possible move to Napoli.

Napoli have long been on James’ trail, but their reluctance to splash out €42m means the midfielder is still a Madrid player.

The Colombian was left out of Los Blancos’ last two friendlies against Red Bull Salzburg and Roma, but Zidane made it clear he could yet work his way back into contention.

The Colombian was left out of Los Blancos’ last two friendlies against Red Bull Salzburg and Roma, but Zidane made it clear he could yet work his way back into contention.

“James is a player we’ve registered,” he said after his side’s penalties defeat to the Giallorossi.

“He hasn’t been called up for either game, but that can change. Anything can happen until September 2, but that goes for all the other teams.

“Ultimately, I’ll always count on a Madrid player. You can ask me about this or that player until September 2, but my answer will always be the same.

“This is the squad I have and these are my players, that’s it.”
