Farhad Moshiri claims Everton “went right up to” Napoli’s €67m asking price for Kalidou Koulibaly – only for the Partenopei to suddenly pull out of a deal.

Speaking to talkSPORT on Monday, Moshiri explained how Everton had gone head-to-head with Chelsea for Koulibaly once they had sold John Stones to Manchester City and encountered a similar situation with Manolo Gabbiadini.

“We tried to buy [Kalidou] Koulibaly from Napoli and they wanted £60m (€67m),” said the Iranian.

“We tried to buy [Kalidou] Koulibaly from Napoli and they wanted £60m (€67m),” said the Iranian.

“We competed with Chelsea for him, went right up to the asking price and they didn’t want to sell.

“Every defender now in Europe seems to be £50m, 29, 30-year-olds. It’s Monopoly money, it doesn’t mean anything.

“[Manolo] Gabbiadini of Napoli, they sold Higuain and then decided not to sell.

“But you don’t really know if that would have helped us … Gabbiadini has scored one Serie A goal since.”
