Napoli are laying on a charm offensive for Liverpool after the controversy of the tweet warning fans of this ‘dangerous’ city, including a walk along the sea front and a cake in the form of Vesuvius.

The Champions League match kicks off at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

The people of Naples have been offended by the official Liverpool tweet warning supporters they could be “targeted for theft, robbery, or assault” if venturing outside of their hotels.

Instead, Liverpool have been greeted with a charm offensive from the locals, including Napoli laying on a special lunch for the directors and UEFA delegates.

The menu included an Aperol Spritz, Millefeuille of prawns and bufala mozzarella, pasta with peas and cuttlefish, sea bass in salt crust and the piece de resistance, a ‘Champions League Cake’ in the shape of Vesuvius.

Meanwhile, the entire Liverpool squad including coach Jurgen Klopp wandered out of their hotel for a walk along the seafront with the Bay of Naples laid out before them, greeted enthusiastically by locals.

Former Roma man Mohamed Salah was asked if he likes Naples and replied: “Of course.”
