Napoli have hit out at ‘badly-translated’ reports that quoted Arkadiusz Milik as suggesting Dries Mertens should have taken over the captaincy.

Several Italian outlets carried the quotes on Wednesday morning, which originate from Milik’s YouTube interview with Foot Truck.

“Dries is a really great guy, he deserves the captain’s armband,” the striker would have said.

“When he sees our kit man, he always asks him how he’s doing and he doesn’t do it forcibly. He really means it.

“He always asks how everyone is in the dressing room and sometimes buys gifts for us.

“When I joined Napoli, he was the first to ask me how I was and if I had any problems.

“He always invites us to dinner and asks what you want to do the next day. Everyone in a team needs someone like him.”

However, the Partenopei hit back: “Milik is deeply perplexed by how often, too often, Polish interviews are badly translated.

“He stresses that he NEVER said Mertens deserved the captain’s armband, evidently over Insigne.

“Milik only said that Dries was a great person, as well as a great player, with a very strong character, so much so that he could captain any team, without referring to Napoli in any way.”

Lorenzo Insigne replaced Marek Hamsik as captain after the midfielder left Napoli for Chinese side Dalian Yifang last month.
