Napoli director Mauro Meluso discusses the club’s ambitions for this season in Italy and Europe, as well as Piotr Zielinski and Victor Osimhen contract talks.

The match with Cagliari kicks off at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona at 17.00 GMT.

You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens from this game, Lecce-Frosinone and Torino-Empoli on the LIVEBLOG.

The director of sport was asked if Napoli are looking towards retaining the Scudetto or keeping their focus more on simply securing a top four finish.

“If you look up and it’s so high that you risk falling down, that’s too high. I would take it step by step, one game at a time, trying to get as many points as possible and then we’ll see where we are later on,” Meluso told DAZN.

“There is a big gap to the top, but we have to try to take it one game at a time. We are in the top 16 teams in Europe, so that is a great result, and now want to keep going as far as possible.”

The last few days have been dominated also by reports about the contract extension talks for both Zielinski – who is out of action today due to a knee problem – and striker Osimhen.

“We are working behind the scenes. There are lots of reports because obviously people have to talk, but we work in a reserved fashion and we will see in the next few weeks.”

The Osimhen deal is expected to be imminent with a release clause set at circa €130-140m, although that won’t be enough to put the likes of Arsenal or Chelsea off next summer.

As for Zielinski, his contract will run down on June 30 and there has already been interest in snapping him up as a free transfer from Inter, Lazio and Juventus.
