Napoli are hard at work planning their future and now they need to decide whether to move forward with Davide Ospina or Alex Meret as the number one.

The former’s contract expires at the end of this month and he’s already been offered a new deal, with the Partenopei stumping up a one-year offer with an option for a second. No response has arrived yet from Ospina, who has been linked with a move to Lazio or Real Madrid in recent months.

As reported by Calciomercato.com, Napoli’s plan is to tie down Ospina to a new deal and move forward with him as the number one. Should he sign the renewal, the club will then look to find a new home for Meret, who has no interest in remaining a second-choice option.

If Ospina decides not to renew his deal, allowing him to join Real Madrid or Lazio, then Napoli would offer Meret a new deal and make him the number one.

A decision needs to be made before the end of this month, putting the pressure on Napoli as the summer transfer window approaches.

3 thought on “Napoli at a goalkeeper crossroads: Meret or Ospina”
  1. Good Lord, there is no comparison! That howler against Empoli by Meret is possibly the worst single play by a goalkeeper I’ve ever seen. If Napoli go with him as Number One, they can kiss their title hopes goodbye before the season even begins.

  2. Ospina has his howlers too, but he is way better. Meret is another italian invention, like Perin

  3. I don’t understand how every single person who watches the games is in consensus that Ospina is much better and we continue to see this debate. If Meret was not Italian, he would already be gone. I can already see Napoli letting Mertens and Koulibaly leave, going with Meret. If that happens, they won’t make it out of group stage in Champions league and they’ll be lucky to finish top 7 in Serie A next year.
