Napoli have appealed Carlo Ancelotti’s one-match ban as Cristiano Giuntoli claims VAR should be entrusted to “former players with 20 years of experience”.

Ancelotti was sent down the tunnel during Napoli’s 2-2 draw with Atalanta after referee Piero Giacomelli refused to award his side a penalty or consult the VAR over Simon Kjaer’s clash in the box with Fernando Llorente.

However, the Partenopei insist on having the Coach in the dugout against Roma tomorrow and have lodged an urgent appeal to have his suspension revoked.

“Him and I were just calming down the players, looking to finish the game. There can’t be a red card to someone who is that collaborative,” sporting director Giuntoli told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“The explanation was: ‘I had to do something because of all the mess.’"

“These are anomalies we witness every Sunday, due to a lack of personality from the referee.

“We no longer know who the referee is, it’s the referee, VAR or linesmen, who never raise their flag, even if it’s an obvious offside, to prevent any responsibility.

“We want clarity, we must be respected, the people of Napoli must be respected, as well as the club for the good things we’ve done in recent seasons.

“We cannot be presented with any inaccurate games, no matter if it’s for or against. We do not want help, we just want clarity.

“I haven’t seen what happened on Wednesday in five years. There’ll be a reason why the VAR didn’t intervene.

“The Dane [Kjaer] lashed out at the Spaniard [Llorente], who was defending himself, otherwise he would’ve been hit in the face. It was a clear penalty.

“VAR must be entrusted to former players with 20 years of experience and understand the dynamics of the game.”
