Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan feels Belgium Coach Roberto Martinez “was looking for a reason not to select me”.

The 30-year-old has not been included in the World Cup squad, a decision which has caused him to turn his back on international football.

“Sometimes it’s difficult, particularly because I can see the adverts,” Nainggolan told HLN.

“It hurts, but I look at it positively. Not being called-up means a three week holiday.

“When Martinez came to see me in Rome I felt he was looking for a reason not to select me. He said I’m a fantastic player, but he couldn’t give me the same role for Belgium as I have with Roma.

“According to him nothing was decided at that point, but for me it was all clear.

“He said I’m not there for tactical reasons, but I’ve played in Italy for years and it’s the most tactical league.

“I did well for the Diables Rouges at the European Championships, but suddenly after the Spain game I was out.

“It’s true that I arrived late but I’m not the only one who did that with Belgium.

“I understand that I’m also supposed to be an example for young people. If that were the case I’d have been a teacher. I think we should talk about performances on the pitch, not what happens off it.

“I will not go back to Belgium, it's over for me, my decision was correct.”
