As he emerged, Sky Sport Italia claim he was asked about the encounter by fans and replied: “I’m smiling, aren’t I?”

It’s believed the new contract could be signed over the next few days, most likely when the squad is already on its US summer tour.

Although the Belgian international’s current deal runs to June 2020 and was only signed in October 2016, his impressive form and growing interest from numerous clubs mean he expects a significant wage increase.

There is said to be a gap of €500,000 between offer and demand right now, which can be papered over with bonuses.
