Roma are said to be in negotiations with Atalanta for Colombia international striker Luis Muriel, with a potential maxi swap deal for several players.

According to Sportitalia, talks are progressing for the 31-year-old centre-forward.

As for La Gazzetta dello Sport, they see it as part of a wider deal that could also bring Stephan El Shaarawy to Atalanta, with Mario Pasalic or Aleksei Miranchuk going the other way to the Stadio Olimpico.

This might be Muriel’s time to leave Bergamo three years after his €21.2m signing from Sevilla, as they failed to qualify for Europe and his contract will expire in June 2023.

That also means they do not need as large a squad as in previous campaigns, when they were in the Champions League.

Muriel holds the joint record for most Serie A goals scored off the bench, giving him the reputation of a super-sub who can run at tired legs.

This could well see him act as understudy to Tammy Abraham, although he is also able to play off the shoulder of another powerful striker like Duvan Zapata.

Last season Muriel contributed 14 goals and 10 assists in 39 competitive appearances for Atalanta.

  1. Just one season out of Europe and the break up of the team happens? Gasperini deserves better than this
