Muriel completed a transfer to Atalanta from Sevilla on Friday, but it had been feared that the Colombian was signed as a potential replacement for Zapata.

Speaking to the club’s YouTube channel, however, the 28-year-old assured he was expecting to line up alongside his fellow Colombian.

“I’m fine, I’m happy. The enthusiasm that everyone transmitted to me, from the President to the Coach, was very important.

“I felt very much wanted, a unique feeling. I just want to get going now. Zapata’s in love with the city and club.

“Duvan has already told me a bit about Atalanta, all beautiful things. I’ve known him for many years, we were also teammates at the U-20 World Cup.

“In attack, we linked up many times. He’s a true friend. Having him in the team will be important, we can do very well together.

“Atalanta are a club who are growing. The work they’ve done in recent years has let them conquer many objectives with many important players.

“When you see them on the field, they put fear in their opponents. Gasperini has given this team an important identity. I can’t wait to start, help, do my bit and keep improving.

“The fans are very passionate here, everyone knows that. As an opponent I suffered a lot against them, even more so last season.

“Now, having them on my side will be an extra stimulus. Together we can do many beautiful things.”
