With Rafa Benitez reportedly on his way out of the club following his ‘back me or sack me' statements, the rumour mill has been rife with potential replacements.

There is even a story claiming while Moratti was in Spain last night and today, he held talks with former Coach Mourinho.

“There has not been and there will not be any contact in Madrid between Mourinho and Moratti. It would make no sense,” insisted spokesman Eladio Parames to news agency ANSA.

“Mourinho has a contract with Real Madrid and he will respect it. Anything else is absurd speculation.

“I think it's unlikely he'd leave at the end of the season, although you never can tell in football. It depends on the season and the club, but it's not normal that Mourinho would leave a project after just one year. He has never done that.”

A more likely candidate to replace Benitez on the bench after Christmas is Spalletti, who is currently at the helm of Zenit St Petersburg.

“Spalletti will be the Zenit Coach next season as well. He said that himself,” a Zenit spokesman was quoted as saying in Spanish newspaper As.

“Talk of contact with Inter is not true.”
