Former Inter boss Jose Mourinho believes his old protege Mario Balotelli will ‘get better in the future’.

Mourinho coached Balotelli at Inter between 2008 and 2010, and he has a soft spot for the Olympique Marseille striker, despite acknowledging his failure to fulfil his potential.

“He could be better than what he is,” the ex-Manchester United manager told RMC Sport.

“I recently told the same thing to one of my players, and he replied: “You’re right, but I love being who I am.”

“Some players have this mentality, they like to be what they are. Sometimes it’s also the case because those around them don’t help them, but I really love Mario.

“He could’ve been better, but he’s good as he is. He won titles in England and Italy, won the Champions League and he’ll get better in the future because he’s a captivating player.”
