Former Inter President Massimo Moratti believes Walter Mazzarri’s dismissal was inevitable – insisting he’s never seen a Coach who was so disliked.

After overseeing a run of results which saw the Nerazzurri fall to ninth in Serie A, the former Napoli Coach was replaced by Roberto Mancini.

Moratti was President during Mancini’s first spell at the club, and believes that the change on the bench was inevitable.

“I’ve never seen a Coach so disliked by the man on the street,” Moratti exclaimed at the launch of Pirelli’s 2015 calendar.

“Mazzarri is a good person, but his character didn’t help him, he was irritable at the end and likely didn’t listen to anyone.

“He created a situation where continuing in the job was no longer possible.

“A combination of the whistles in the stadium, the unhappy fans and the position in the table.

“Unfortunately some decisions have to be taken, even if it’s with a heavy heart.

“Mazzarri is a good Coach, and he’s shown that throughout his career.

“Unfortunately he’s been unlucky recently, and some results could have gone the other way. That’s football.”

Moratti had words of praise for Mazzarri’s successor, despite the fact that he himself sacked Mancini in his time as Inter President.

“At this complicated juncture I think there were only two Coaches who could take over the team. One is Mancini, the other is Leonardo.

“Both are good Coaches, and both know Inter. Choosing someone who didn’t know the environment would have been a risk, and Thohir has done well.

“Roberto is a great coach and he’s shown that both at Inter and during the rest of his career.

“Few Coaches have won as much as he did at Inter, and must mean something.

“They needed someone the fans could trust. Hopefully, he will do just as well in this second adventure.”

Mancini’s first match on his return to the Inter bench will be the derby with Milan and Moratti admits he enjoys the occasion more now he’s no longer President.

“The derby is a special game, now that I’m no longer President I can enjoy it a bit more.

“Let’s hope I can get a ticket…”
