Massimo Moratti believes Luciano Spalletti is the right man to lead Inter, but admits he “didn’t expect” so much Milan transfer activity.

The former Nerazzurri President is no longer part of the club, but “I keep informed on what they do and they are very courteous with me,” as he explained on Radiouno.

“We always have Jose Mourinho in mind as the example of an ideal Inter Coach. I can say Spalletti has great character and is a serious professional.

“You need a few professional reference points and Borja Valero represents that. I think Inter have the frightening need to improve their defence, while in attack I hope Mauro Icardi can start to express himself consistently. He’s got what it takes, but has to prove it in the difficult games.

“It would be nice to see him accompanied by another great striker, but these decisions are up to the Coach, just as they would’ve been even if I had still been President.”

The summer has been dominated by Inter’s cousins Milan, who after their Chinese takeover have splashed €211m and counting on the market.

“Milan are moving very well and to be honest I didn’t expect that,” continued Moratti.

“I don’t know some of the players they signed, while they did well to resolve the Gianluigi Donnarumma issue and have a good Coach in Vincenzo Montella.

“Leonardo Bonucci used to be with Inter, so now seeing him play for Juventus or Milan makes no difference. Juve always seem to make very wise signings and we’ll have to see if they can overcome the blow of that Champions League Final defeat.”
