Riccardo Montolivo relished his first start in over six months, even if Milan lost to Genoa. “We lack consistency.”

“I had positive sensations and just getting back on the pitch is a victory for me,” Montolivo told Milan Channel and Sky Sport Italia.

The midfielder had been out of action since breaking his leg during Italy’s 0-0 international friendly draw against the Republic of Ireland on May 31.

“I had positive sensations and just getting back on the pitch is a victory for me,” Montolivo told Milan Channel and Sky Sport Italia.

“I hoped it would coincide with a different result, but instead we are commenting on a defeat. I did everything to get back in action and speed the process up, but what counts is to find your ideal form. I have many people to thank, from the club to my family, my teammates and the medical staff.”

This game at Marassi was a head-to-head for third place, but the 1-0 defeat means Genoa go clear.

“We were unable to repeat our first half performance and the chances we had created. We struggled, but an incident could’ve still turned things around. We conceded from a corner and that was about it for Genoa.

“I guess Genoa were hungrier than us, as we should’ve tried to claw back a result with our fingernails if necessary. We lack consistency and I hope this will teach us a lesson.

“We do have the potential to take third place, but clearly this objective has to go through consistent results, which at the moment we are lacking.”
