Vincenzo Montella confessed he is “worried” by Fiorentina’s sudden downturn in form, beaten 3-0 by Napoli.

“This was an ugly defeat. We weren’t incisive, didn’t show character, heart or soul, so that worries me,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We could've conceded a lot more than three today, as we lost all logic in some of our defending. Aside from what people might think, the race for European places is still wide open.

“Considering our characteristics and those of Napoli, we wanted to control the game early on, but we didn’t have the right approach. We gifted a goal to Napoli from a throw-in and the situation changed from there.”

Napoli had scored a fourth goal, as Gonzalo Higuain's screamer bounced off the underside of the bar and crossed the line, but was not spotted by the officials.

"Nobody saw it clearly at the time, as the ball was going so fast. These things can happen and fortunately it wasn't decisive for the result."

Montella admits the 3-0 Coppa Italia semi-final home defeat to Juventus on Tuesday night also had a major effect on the Viola.

“We have to find an explanation, but it’s not a physical issue. It’s probably a psychological issue, because probably the midweek defeat really hit our confidence hard. We didn’t expect to lose so heavily to Juventus and that also is a concern.

“The 4-0 defeat to Lazio came at the end of a long run of fixtures and they were on exceptional form.

“What does worry me is the mind, as over the last five or six days I’ve seen a different team. I don’t like this team and it’s up to me to give them different motivation and spur them on to change tack.”
