The tactician spoke to Sky Sport Italia and Mediaset Premium after a chaotic 4-2 defeat at Napoli, which saw Juraj Kucka and M’Baye Niang sent off.

“We started very well and created several chances until their opening goal changed the inertia of the game. That is something we have to work on, keeping our mentality when things go wrong.

“We gifted two red cards. I will not accept continual protests against the referee. Down to 10 men it was complicated, with nine it became a mountain to climb.

“I am happy with the performance, but also let down, because we can’t emerge from a game like that empty-handed. In the first 20 minutes we were clearly superior to Napoli, but lost confidence after their goal.

“After the break we reacted like a great team. The objective is to play like that for 90 minutes.”

Montella made several sarcastic comments in his post-match interviews, referring to Niang’s second yellow card for blocking a goal kick.

“What we lack is the kind of sneaky tactics that for example Pepe Reina had in seeking out Niang. We need to be a bit sneakier and to grow in that sense.”

The Coach was also asked about the lack of transfer activity, especially compared to rivals Inter who spent €72m this weekend on two players.

“We knew our finances would be limited. I saw the headlines this morning and thought maybe our Chinese owners sent the cheque to the wrong address…”

While Inter’s Chinese take-over has been completed, Milan remain in limbo after months of negotiations and the sale won’t be finalised until at least November.

“The market is still open, so we’ll see what happens over the next few days. I do have a little sadness based on what could’ve been and didn’t happen.”
