The Rossoneri began their Serie A campaign with a convincing victory over Davide Nicola’s team, who were reduced to ten men early on after consultation with the new VAR system.

“We definitely need time to get used to it, but everyone was calmer with the VAR in place,” Montella commented after technology was consulted to deem that Federico Ceccherini had brought down Partick Curtone for an early penalty.

“The attitude of my players really pleased me. They played with attention and intensity.”

Franck Kessie converted the resulting penalty following Ceccherini's dismissal, which was then added to by strikes from Cutrone and Suso.

However, the Rossoneri boss admits his team still have things to work on.

“We need to improve our game management in order to become a winning team. The sending off made everything easier.

“But there are things to work on.”

Milan fielded a host of their summer signings on the opening Serie A matchday, but Montella singled out Kessie as his side’s stand-out performer.

“All the boys were strong. Kessie comes to mind because he is very intelligent. I expected him to be strong, but not that much.”
