The Viola’s season effectively ended on Thursday with a 2-1 defeat to Atalanta, knocking them out of the Coppa Italia semi-finals 5-4 on aggregate.

“We have to start again from the spirit of this team and that means picking up points. There will be time for me, the players and the club to evaluate everything,” said Montella in his Press conference.

“On Friday we felt disappointed, but that has passed now. We wear the Fiorentina jersey, we represent an iconic city and must remember that at all times.

“Sassuolo had a very strong start to the season, Roberto De Zerbi has a clear and interesting tactical approach. We too need to create an identity and know the people of Florence appreciate beauty in their football.

“My idea of football is well known here and it is my job to analyse the squad and the figures we need in it. The plan is to find players who are functional for my tactical approach, which is to keep the ball and control the tempo.”

Having failed to qualify for Europe and brought in a new Coach during the final weeks of the campaign, the focus inevitably turns to the summer revamp and the possible exodus of star names.

“There are no irreplaceable players,” assured Montella. “Anyone in this team must be motivated and fully convinced they want to stay.

“You can sell players, everyone can, it’s about finding the right replacements. That is what makes the difference.

“In any case, I haven’t seen a sense of players rushing for the door. Chiesa is playing through fitness difficulties, Veretout is out of position to help out and so is Milenkovic.

“The club wants to relaunch and build, but the problem with football is that someone will always be disappointed. Not everyone can achieve their objectives.”
