“A Coach has to make do with what he has and look on the bright side. Many players were absent, but it’s good that Milan have so many internationals,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“We must be aware of our strength. The break helped us get to know some players and work more closely with individuals.

“Udinese like to sit deep, probably out of choice, and have players who are strong on the counter. There are also young players of great potential. We studied their strengths and weaknesses, so we are prepared.

“Over the next few weeks we will be facing top level sides and those performances will give an important response on our growth process. I cannot split the psychological aspect from the tactical, so I want a response on every level.

“We want to impose our game on the opposition and do well in the transitional phase. I expect the team to help the defence a lot more than we’ve seen so far.”

Montella confirmed Jose Ernesto Sosa is available, but M'Baye Niang and Juraj Kucka are suspended, so will Milan switch to 4-3-3?

“I don’t like to give clues, but often you already know… It seems pretty clear to me. Jack Bonaventura showed he can do well both in a three-man midfield and wide attack, for Italy and Milan.

“I don’t believe in the dogma of tactical systems. A team must evolve over time, but right now we don’t have the foundations to build on. The important thing is to focus on the principles of football. Transforming tactics now would only create confusion.

“The break was particularly good for Gianluca Lapadula, as he has enthusiasm and is frenetic, that kind of hunger a striker needs to make his mark. I think he can give us a hand.

“The transfer market was limited, but we did very well to hold on to precious figures like Carlos Bacca, Alessio Romagnoli and Mattia De Sciglio. I continue to say this squad is worth more than even they think, but the players have to prove it and have more confidence in each other too.

“I must admit I expected the change of ownership to be more difficult, but it is making very little difference to the team.”
