Milan Coach Vincenzo Montella insists links to the Italy job were “just rumours” and denies betraying Sampdoria.
The former striker has taken over from Cristian Brocchi on the Rossoneri bench, having reportedly been considered for Azzurri CT, before the job went to Giampiero Ventura.
“I came back from holiday in the Orient on June 20,” Montella explained at his Diavolo presentation.
“A few days later I learned of Milan’s interest. For the national team it was just rumours.

“I came back from holiday in the Orient on June 20,” Montella explained at his Diavolo presentation.
“A few days later I learned of Milan’s interest. For the national team it was just rumours.
“Sampdoria? I worked for Samp until the last day, and I have a great relationship with them. Before talking with Milan, I had written permission from the club.
“I’m sorry if the fans think I’m a traitor, I’ve always given everything for that club, one with which I have a special relationship.”
Sinisa Mihajlovic declared last season that Milan “should call an exorcist” if he couldn't fix their problems, and Montella was asked about that quote.
“Here I am!” the Coach said with a laugh.
“I don’t like big declarations though, we have to all work together to achieve our goals. It’s a great challenge and I’m convinced that we can all win together.
“I respect all of my predecessors here at Milan, who have always given their best.
“What do I have that they didn’t? Maybe nothing…”
Finally, l’aeroplanino was asked about Japanese international Keisuke Honda, who has been linked with a move away.
“I’ll consider him, like everyone else,” Montella replied.
“He has clear characteristics, I want to evaluate him and get to know him like everyone else. He’s a great player.”
