Vincenzo Montella has played down rumours of his departure – ‘winning in Florence would be really special’.

The Viola Coach has been linked with replacing Pippo Inzaghi on the Milan bench, but in an interview with la Repubblica the former striker has distanced himself from such speculation.

“We want to compete on all fronts,” Montella told the newspaper.

“For sure though, we’d like to win a trophy. As for my future, I’m happy here and I have a contract. You just have to take the gossip for what it is.

“I want to continue to grow, a professional must always seek new challenges. At the end of the season we’ll discuss what to do in the future.

“What I want is for all of us to continue to grow together. Winning in Florence would be really special, and so I say ‘let’s try’.”

The former Catania Coach also discussed the current season, and admits he struggled at the outset.

“At the beginning of the season I was worried. There were some problems, and I still had to figure out the basic details of this job.

“To begin with I thought the fact that I only stopped playing a few years ago was enough to understand what was going on in the heads of my players.

“It’s not that easy though, and in that sense I questioned myself.

“The turning point of the season was in late November, after the defeat to Napoli. Andrea Della Valle came to speak to us, he was very encouraging.

“The atmosphere suddenly changed, and we went to Verona to win. However, the real change of pace came in 2015.

“Our mentality has matured, and we have a real hungry spirit. We know that playing for Fiorentina means representing certain important values: generosity, respect for the jersey and playing entertaining football.”
