Vincenzo Montella felt Fiorentina were “in total control” for their 2-0 victory at Milan.

Juan Manuel Vargas and Borja Valero were on target as the Viola conquered San Siro for the third year running despite missing Juan Cuadrado, David Pizarro and Mario Gomez.

“Tonight we deserved the victory with a great performance and players who are settling into the squad like Vargas,” Montella told Sky Sport Italia.

“We are taking advantage of all our resources and the players show great professionalism. We must not look to the past or the future, just the present. This was a delicate moment in which the team could’ve sought alibis, but instead the squad just sought the victory.

“We forced the San Siro crowd to be impatient, as we allowed Milan nothing and as time wore on they started to grumble.

“Milan never looked able to get back into the game, as Fiorentina seemed to be in total control, even if we were a little tired in the second half and didn’t go on the counter as much.”

This defeat puts Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri under a great deal of pressure and Montella feels for him.

“The rule in Italy, but also elsewhere, is that the credit for success goes to everyone and the blame for a defeat goes to the Coach!”

The fact remains Fiorentina achieved this success with a heavily weakened side.

“Ryder Matos is a good forward, is young and already showed real courage in the Europa League, so I had no doubts fielding him in this important match.

“Borja Valero’s football intelligence is sublime. He can adapt to every situation and with his excellent technique does well everywhere.

“Vargas won me over with his hard work and sacrifice in training. I told him he’d make the step up if that desire was intact even after scoring a goal and that proved to be the case. He’s not at 100 per cent yet, but played with experience and tenacity tonight.

“Can Fiorentina get into the title race? I only know the season has just started, the table is very tight and anything can happen.”
