“I like working abroad, just as I like working in Italy. This year we had a lot of satisfaction with Sevilla but it ended badly and in an unexpected way.

“We had a nice run in Europe, and I’d still happily go abroad again.

Fiorentina or Napoli? I had three wonderful years in Florence, it’s a unique city. I had a great time there, but we need to leave Coaches to work in peace.

“We’ll see what the future holds, but both teams are in my heart.”

Montella was also asked for his opinions on Milan, having been replaced by Gennaro Gattuso last season.

“I watch Milan with a bit of melancholy, but also affection. They’ve assembled a very good squad.

“My work was incomplete, not least because of all the changes, but I don’t bear any grudges. The squad has been strengthened, with [Gonzalo] Higuain above all, and the young players are growing.

“I see ample room for improvement.”
