Catania Coach Vincenzo Montella, who worked with Fabio Capello at Roma, says the decision to resign as England manager was “understandable.”

Capello officially tended his resignation today after publicly criticising the FA’s decision to strip John Terry of the captain’s armband as he goes into a trial for racist abuse.

“The resignation was a surprise, but considering the motivation behind it I’d say it was an understandable choice,” said Montella.

“He felt his legitimacy and authority were taken away. He probably no longer felt the faith of the FA or the power to make his own decisions, so if that was the case then he made the right move.

“Besides, his contract was set to expire in the summer, so his work was nearly completed. It’s a shame he didn’t get the chance to prove he could take England back to victory after many years at Euro 2012.

“At that level, with a national side of such prestige, you want to be involved in such important decisions as the captain’s armband.

“I just hope he won’t take my job at Catania, seeing as he’s on the market!” joked Montella.
