Roma sporting director Monchi is “convinced the referee would have been happy to have VAR” against Liverpool.

The Giallorossi won 4-2 in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final, but it wasn’t enough to overturn the 5-2 loss in the first leg and reach the final.

“First of all congratulations to Liverpool,” Monchi said, speaking to RMC Sport.

“Returning to the referees, I think it’s time for deep reflection and to understand that certain things are not good.

“I’m convinced that the referee would have been happy to have VAR available, because when he sees the replays he certainly won’t be happy to see he should have whistled for two penalties.

“If possible there must be help to allow them to make fewer mistakes and not just for us, there have been oversights in other games.

“The fans should be proud of the team as we are proud of them because it was a wonderful evening.”
