Roma sporting director Monchi is pleased they didn’t draw Sevilla in today’s Champions League draw.

The Giallorossi will face Shakhtar Donetsk in the Last 16, with the first leg to be played in Kharkiv on February 21 and the return leg at the Olimpico on March 13.

“Would Sevilla have been better?” Monchi considered, speaking to reporters after the draw.

“I said before the draw I wouldn’t want to face them, in the end we have Shakhtar and we’ll see.

“Now we have to close out the year with important Serie A matches, then we’ll work together to see if we need anything [in January].

“I think the best reinforcements will be [Patrik] Schick, [Gregoire] Defrel and Emerson [Palmieri] but we can’t forget the transfer window is open from January 2.”

This weekend brought a draw with Chievo, and Monchi was also asked about that.

“We need to manage the squad as best we can with a lot of matches. [Chievo goalkeeper Stefano] Sorrentino was key to this draw, but we have to think about whether we worked well or not and keep doing what was done well before the game.

“Yesterday we broke the record for shots on target for an away match, I’m happy with the mentality [Coach] Eusebio [Di Francesco] has brought.”
