Monaco director Vadim Vasilyev said their performance against Juventus “showed we deserve” to be in the Champions League quarters.

Monaco director Vadim Vasilyev said their performance against Juventus “showed we deserve” to be in the Champions League quarters.

The Principality side was beaten 1-0 in the first leg by an Arturo Vidal penalty, with the decider on April 22.

“We showed everyone that we deserve to be in the top eight of European football,” declared Vasilyev.

“We did not deserve to lose, but we accept the result. We lost a battle, but not the war. I’m convinced we’ll have a great comeback in the second leg and qualify.”

Coach Leonardo Jardim had called the penalty decision “a grave injustice,” but the director was less damning.

“I’m disappointed, because with so much hard work that decision could prove the tipping point in the tie.”

The foul for the spot-kick did appear to be slightly outside the box, but it’s also true to say Ricardo Carvalho was only booked when it could’ve been a straight red card for tripping Alvaro Morata.

Monaco captain Andrea Raggi confirmed as much when he spoke to Sky Sport Italia tonight.

“Seeing the incident, it’s outside the area. You could say it continues inside, but it is without doubt a foul. The referee had only a few seconds to decide,” defender Raggi.
