Diego Milito believes Javier Zanetti is the “one person” who could convince Barcelona’s Lionel Messi to join Inter.

The Argentinian international is widely regarded as the best player in the world, and has spent his entire career with the Blaugrana, scoring 480 goals in 555 games.

The Argentinian international is widely regarded as the best player in the world, and has spent his entire career with the Blaugrana, scoring 480 goals in 555 games.

Former Nerazzurri director Tronchetti Provera has linked Messi with a move to San Siro, and he’s yet to sign an extension to his €40m per year contract with Barça.

While it remains highly unlikely that the forward will move to Inter, a Beneamata hero believes there is one man who could convince his compatriot.

“I think it’s difficult to see Leo leaving Barcelona,” Milito cautioned, speaking to Corriere dello Sport.

“In football though, dreaming costs nothing. And sometimes dreams come true…

“Zanetti has an incredible relationship with him, and if there’s one person who can convince Messi to come to Inter then it’s Pupi. It would be a great signing.”

Milito’s goals fired the Nerazzurri to the treble in 2010, and they now have another Argentine leading the line in the form of Mauro Icardi.

“He has always shown the qualities of a finisher. You could see [when he signed] that he has goals in his DNA, he knows where to stand in the area.

“Honestly, I’ve not been surprised by his scoring average, because we’re talking about one of the best centre-forwards out there.”

The former striker was then asked whether his old side can qualify for the Champions League this season.

“Inter needed consistency and efficiency and [Stefano] Pioli has given them that. I think with him on the bench there’s room for growth in terms of the style of play, as everyone can already see the results.

“Compared to two months ago, they’ve made up a lot of ground and for the next two weekends Inter’s calendar is favourable.

“They can eat away at the gap and then go for broke against Juventus in Turin.”
