Sergej Milinkovic-Savic reveals what Luis Alberto asked after his goal in the 2-1 win over Sassuolo and the worst thing about waiting for VAR.
The Aquile needed a boost after their bruising 3-0 defeat to arch-rivals Roma in the Derby della Capitale.
They certainly got it, beating Sassuolo 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico on a chilly day that even saw them playing under hail.
“I told the coach I was a little tired, as I only arrived two days before the game after international duty,” Milinkovic-Savic told DAZN.
“I think we showed from the first minute that this was not the team seen in the derby. I like Sassuolo, they play good football and it was a difficult test for us.”
Manuel Lazzari had opened the scoring, then Milinkovic-Savic scored the second on a quickly-taken Luis Alberto free kick.
However, they were made to wait several minutes for VAR to confirm he was not offside, and during that pause he was able to stop the Spaniard claiming it.
“Luis Alberto asked, I told him I definitely touched the ball. Not very well, but I touched it. I saw on the footage it was tight, a matter of millimetres, so it’s only right that VAR takes the time to check. Having said that, it was really cold to be standing there for four minutes.”
The Serbian has now scored nine goals and assisted nine in Serie A this season, so was involved in 18 goals, more than any other midfielder and a new personal best.
“I don’t like to talk about myself, it’s nice to hear important people praise my performances. We want to finish in the top four, I realise it will be difficult, but we’ll try.”
