Milan President Paolo Scaroni reveals that the area of San Siro in Milan remains the priority for both the Rossoneri and Inter, although building the new stadium in Sesto San Giovanni remains an option.

Milan and Inter have already approved a project to build their new stadium (‘The Cathedral’) in the area of San Siro, but their new home won’t be ready before 2027 and the mayor of Milan must hold a public debate to give the green light.

Meantime, the mayor of Sesto San Giovanni, which is just outside Milan, has given his availability to build the new stadium in town.

“San Siro has always been our priority and we’ve been following the project for many years,” Scaroni told Il Corriere della Sera.

“We have invested money, knowing that building a new stadium in the area requires a specific path. We didn’t expect some issues and we hoped some of those had been overtaken. However, there are rules that we must respect, so there are no surprises.

“Inter and we continue to pursue the project. A member of our team met the coordinator of the public debate yesterday and we’ve hired a counselling company to help us prepare for it. Hopefully, the public debate will end soon and if things run smoothly, we could end this process by the end of the year.”

Gerry Cardinale has recently acquired Milan and Scaroni confirms that the RedBird Capital Partners’ chief will have his say on the matter and whether to build the new stadium in Milan or Sesto San Giovanni.

The latter is part of a “Norman Foster’s plan, who had imagined a little Wembley in the area,” said Scaroni.

“We’ll see, we haven’t decided yet. We are linked to Populous [who designed the Cathedral], but we have a new majority shareholder. He is a stadium expert, so he’ll have his say.”
