Milan‘s concerns over plans for a new stadium at La Maura grow with local politicians pushing for another arena built with Inter at San Siro.

Milan have identified the area of La Maura for their new stadium, which would be built without their city rivals, but the path isn’t as smooth as many would expect.

Local politician Filippo Barberis, affiliated with left-wing Partito Democratico who are running the city, has told Repubblica that the best option for the city council would be to have a new stadium shared by Inter and Milan at San Siro.

“Our will is to bring the two teams back to the area where the current stadium is, going beyond La Maura,” he said.

Mayor Beppe Sala hit back on Tuesday morning, saying that if “PD councillors want to convince Milan and Inter, they can do it, if they manage to bring them together, we’d all be happy. I am not against the La Maura project until I see it. I think the party must meet with the clubs.”

Milan have made it clear that they want to build their new stadium in La Maura but haven’t yet presented their official plan to the city council.

The Rossoneri are getting even more resistance from residents and environmental activists, but not necessarily from Sala.

Sky Sport Italia adds that the city Mayor inspected La Maura last week, meeting with the current owners of the hippodrome. The Rossoneri are in a hurry to build a new stadium and will consider leaving Milan, remaining in the municipal perimeter, if plans for La Maura collapse.

Inter, on the other hand, are waiting for the Rossoneri’s decision and their primary option is to build a new stadium at San Siro alongside their city rivals.
