The midfielder rejected Cagliari on deadline day to join the Rossoneri on a €0.5m loan from Fiorentina with a €1m option to buy.
However, after coming on for Chile in the match against Bolivia last night, Fernandez was forced off just 10 minutes later with a groin injury.
The extent of the injury will be assessed by medical staff at Milanello tomorrow, when the player is expected in Milan following the international break.
