Milan president Paolo Scaroni believes the club deserves some of the credit for France’s World Cup campaign. ‘We revitalised Olivier Giroud and he transferred that to his national team.’

Les Bleus have reached the semi-finals and will face Morocco for a spot in the World Cup Final in Qatar.

Giroud was again the hero last night with the decisive goal in their 2-1 victory over England, his fourth in as many games.

“He is doing very well and I think much of their qualification is down to him,” Milan chief Scaroni told Sky Sport Italia.

“We revitalised him and he found this fresh motivation with us that he transferred to his national team.”

Giroud was snapped up from Chelsea for under €3m in the summer of 2021 and has been a true leader in the team, contributing to their Scudetto success last season.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic injured this term, the 36-year-old took on even more responsibility and stepped up to the plate with nine goals and five assists in 19 games between Serie A and the Champions League.

Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema was meant to be the first-choice centre-forward for France at this tournament, but with the Real Madrid hitman injured, Giroud was again promoted to playing constantly.
