Milan have recalled Diego Laxalt early from his season-long loan at Torino, because the deal for Wigan Athletic’s Antonee Robinson collapsed at the last minute.

It was a huge blow for the US international, because Robinson flew in this morning and had a medical.

He had been on his way to the Milan HQ to sign the contract and complete the transfer, worth €7-8m.

However, it suddenly fell apart and the two clubs have very different versions of what happened.

He had been on his way to the Milan HQ to sign the contract and complete the transfer, worth €7-8m.

However, it suddenly fell apart and the two clubs have very different versions of what happened.

“Wigan Athletic defender Antonee Robinson will remain at the DW Stadium after his move to AC Milan could not be completed,” read a statement from the Championship side.

“Robinson, 22, travelled to Milan this morning after the two clubs agreed a fee for the permanent transfer on Thursday evening.

“The USA international underwent a medical examination with AC Milan, though further medical tests with the Italian authorities were required, which were subject to a 72-hour deadline.

“As such, the deal could not be formally ratified before the 8pm Italian Transfer Deadline on Friday.”

However, the unofficial line coming from the Milan camp – and indeed the player – is that there was a disagreement over the cost of the operation and how this would be paid.

With the transfer deadline in Italy closing at 19.00 GMT, the Rossoneri rushed to find an alternative.

They already had him on their books, so recalled Uruguay international Laxalt from his season-long loan at Torino.

Laxalt can play as a left-back or on the left wing and had joined Toro in August on loan for €0.5m with option to buy for €11.5m.

Milan had purchased Laxalt from Genoa in the summer of 2018 for €14.9m.
