News were released this morning that the former player and Coach passed away. His home club Milan will play with a black armband in today's game against Atalanta.

Expressions of solidarity have come from all the major clubs in Serie A and many of the players and pundits, while the Diavolo paid homage to their icon with a statement published on their official site.

“The passing of Cesare Maldini means the passing of a fundamental part of the Rossonero history,” reads the statement.

“The captain of the first European Milan in 1963 at Wembley, the father of Paolo, the anagram of 'Milan' in the letters of his surname.

“All of Milan – all of the people and the representatives of Milan – are touched and express their deeply felt condolences to Mrs Maldini, to his sons and nephews.”
